The first and smallest lesion is called microcomendone because it can not be seen by the naked eye. This lesion is caused by follicles clogged with sebum and bacteria.
When a comedone is open then it is called blackhead. This plugged follicle has reached the surface of the skin. The black color is not a dirt indicative, but bacteria and chemically altered oils.
When a comedone is closed it becomes a whithead and it is a clogged follicle located beneath the skin. They are 1 to 2 milimeters wide and look as white round bumps.
Papules are pink and small bumps on the skin. These inflamed lesions do not have puss.
Postules are inflamed lesions filled with pus that look red at the base.
Cysts are painful and scarring deep postules that become larger. These can in fact damage the skin and cause scars of different shapes and sizes when they heal.
Comedones develop when oil secretions build up beneath the blocked pores. Comedones are the perfect environment for the skin bacterium acnes. Bacteria produces a nodule or a pustule (inflammed lesion) that causes a scar when it heals. Fortunately there are first stage acne treatments to prevent cyst acne.
